We've just submitted miDVD and miDVD Pro version 1.0.2 to the Mac App Store and also released it on shedworx.com.

miDVD and miDVD Pro have been doing great on the Mac App Store and its time for us to fix the bugs that people have come across..

Here's what we've fixed...

Speed

When we create a DVD we have to convert your movies into 'DVD' format (that's MPEG2 for the technically-minded). This is the longest step of the whole DVD creation process.

We have updated our conversion engine so that the conversion stage is a lot faster. This means that burning a DVD full of movies (about 2 hour's worth) will take about half the time now!

Aspect Ratios

We had some problems reported with movies using non-standard aspect rations. This resulted in some movies ending up 'stretched' or 'squashed' on the final DVD.

We have completely developed the aspect ratio handling area of miDVD so this should be all good now.

Previewing

miDVD creates the DVD preview 'on the fly' so that when you are ready to preview your DVD, most of the preview generation has been done and the preview starts straight away.

In some situations the miDVD previewer would crash the app. This was caused by us not correctly handling the fast adding/removing of movies from a DVD project. This is all fixed now, so we don't expect any more problems in this area.

Mountain Lion

We have tested miDVD and miDVD Pro thoroughly against Mountain Lion and everything works fine.

The main change we have made for Mountain Lion is Gatekeeper signing. This only affects the non-App Store versions of the apps and means that our apps are now signed with our Developer ID. This means that our apps will run on Mountain Lion under the default security setup which prohibits unsigned apps from running.

Coming Soon

Our next big thing for miDVD Pro is slideshows. We're working on this now and later in the year we will have a Photo Slideshow feature that we're sure you will love!

Both miDVD and miDVD Pro are now live on shedworx.com and have been submitted to Apple for release on the Mac App Store. Things are moving a bit more slowly on the Mac App Store right now, probably due to the huge number of apps being updated for Mountain Lion. We guess that miDVD and miDVD Pro will be live on the Mac App Store in a few weeks time,

Error 1 message

I just downloaded miDVD. Dragged a movie into the area it said to. Watched Preview and everything was fine. So I pressed the Burn button. Put in a DVD . It showed it was burning onto the DVD and then it stopped giving me an error 1 message. I was burning a .mp4 video. So I decided to come here and ask what happened before I ruined multiple DVDs. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem

I am extremely annoyed that I have just paid £6.99 for the upgrade to pro and everytime I try to burn a disc with more than one file its says error 1 half way through. I am using the correct file formats - AVI and I have made sure I am using a blank disc with the correct amount of space.
.... it doesnt do what I bought it for!

miDVD Pro

please send your log file into support@shedworx.com and we will sort it out.

Hello,

Burning m4v files for DVD player

I downloaded miDVD to burn downloaded movies from my Mac, but so far have been unable to do so. I cannot get the m4v files, or AVI conversions to be recognised and keep on getting a message named error 1, can you tell me what tbis error message is and am I trying to do something that this software is not capable of. How does one go about getting a refund. Thanks

Error code 1

This is a burn error, but is very generic, so we really need to see the log file from miDVD to see what's gone wrong. Please send in your log file to support@shedworx.com and we'll sort it out.

Aspect ratio still flawed? No highlighting of menu icons?

I burnt a DVD with 3 PAL *.mp4 videos with the following resolutions (information given by MacOS 10.8 finder / MediaInfo app):
1. 1280x720 / 1280x720, aspect ratio 16:9
2. 1280x716 / 1280x716, aspect ratio 16:9
3. 1027x576 / 720x576, aspect ratio 16:9

All 3 play fine in 16:9 with the various players on MacOS. The first 2 play fine also from the generated DVD, but the 3rd plays in 4:3 aspect ratio, with black bars on both sides.

Furthermore I recognized, that in the DVD menu none of the 3 animated icons is highlighted, when selecting them, so one has to select them "blind". No big issue, but strange.

That's all true for playing on a Samsung BD-1500 blu ray player.

Aspect ratios

It looks like we've got an aspect ratio problem with that last one. We will have a look at that.

The menu items are supposed to be highlighted as you move the focus from one to another. Did you notice whether they displayed correctly on the Mac DVD player?

Test results with miDVD

Meanwhile I could do some testing:
a) on the Samsung BD1500 blu ray player the menu-highlighting is not visible and the playback is aspect-ratio-distorted with 2 of the 3 films, but it works.
b) on the Mac DVD Player the menu does display correct, but pressing any of the 3 films for playback lets the player crash. The protocol is in: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/90792628/DVD-Player-Crash.txt
c) on the PS3 with newest 4.30 firmware the menu displays correctly and can be highlighted, but playback of any of the 3 films leads to a pattern of diagonal stripes, like in ancient times with analog de-synchronisation. You find the pattern in https://dl.dropbox.com/u/90792628/Play-on-PAL-Playstation.JPG, the menu is correctly displayed as in https://dl.dropbox.com/u/90792628/Menu-on-PAL-Playstation.JPG

It would be great if you could iron out the major remaining problems, because I would much like to use miDVD. It has the potential to be a very good product, and it should not be limited to the NTSC world (if that contributes to the cause).

Best regard, Falk Kuebler

Unfortunately I've got only

Unfortunately I've got only the Samsung player and a Playstation. My MBP's DVD player doesn't recognize my external DVD player. The internal slot is occupied by a SSD disk.

I will test on the PS3 as well.

Terrific - with some easy-to-resolve caveats

I never voluntarily made DVDs from my videos or TV recordings, because the various software apps which I had bought for this purpose were so annoying. This changed with miDVD, and much to my surprise, burning DVDs can be a joy.

But the are 3 caveats:

1. When leaving the preferences for DVD type on the default "automatic", then my DVD generated was garbage, which neither my Samsung blu ray player nor my Playstation 3 could play. Only after tedious investigation I found, that setting the DVD type to PAL resolved the problem. Displaying the NTSC/PAL parameter in the user interface would have saved me from that experience.

2. I understand, that estimating the space needed for the conversions cannot be precise. In case of *.mp4 files it appears to work reasonably well, but in case of *.ts transport streams (which miDVD accepts well, like Smart Converter Pro also does) the amount of space needed appears to be grossly underestimated. I don't know whether one can change that easily.

3. If the space is underestimated, then after a long conversion time there is simply a message about that, with no indication, which file would consume which amount of space, and how much is missing. So either one leaves too much unused space in reserve right from the beginning, or one starts a day-long trial&error game. And even more annoying: all conversions are lost without asking, whether they should be used for the next try. I guess that is a problem for every user and could be improved in the app very easily.

Please take my remarks about the caveats as constructive acknowledgement of a great product start.

miDVD

Thanks for the feedback - glad you enjoyed miDVD. We went to great lengths to make it as simple as possible.

For the PAL/NTSC setting, we try and guess the right format for you. It looks like we got it wrong in your situation. We will look into displaying something at burn time.

The underestimating is probably a bug for the TS video type. We will look into that further.

We are looking at the option to 'burn another' which will start caching previous conversions. We will look into dealing with conversion problems more effectively with this.

Sounds good ;-)
